Adaptive Reuse

Final year architecture project on the adaptive reuse of BDL museum

Mentor: Ar. Mridula Pillai and Ar. Anuj Gudekar

The Bhau Daji Lad museum, built in the 18th century, is located in the middle of a bustling metropolis that lacks spaces for recreation with little or no land to spare. Rather than building a new museum, the design proposal focused on augmenting an already existing structure. The project looked at changing the idea of a museum from a static structure that was visited only to complete a checklist on the travel itinerary to a vibrant and evolving entity. A series of technology interventions like projection mapping and contextually changing interactive exhibits were introduced. The museum building and its environment would become a reflection of the city in its present and historical context.
